Key West weekend scene

Weekend itinerary

Key West weekend itinerary

Walk Old Town Friday, take to the water Saturday, then finish with Fort Zachary Taylor, brunch, and one last harbor view Sunday.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

A Key West weekend moves between shaded Old Town blocks, the Historic Seaport, turquoise water, and sunset at the island's western edge.

Best length

2 nights

Three nights make room for a real water day and an unhurried Old Town morning. Two nights work if arrival is early and the boat outing is reserved in advance.

Stay

Havana Cabana at Key West

Havana Cabana leans into a playful Cuban-inspired resort atmosphere, with a large pool and an Old Town shuttle…

Main activity

Old Town, the Historic Seaport, and the water

Key West becomes clearer when Old Town history, the working harbor, and the surrounding water are treated as three connected parts of the same island city.

Trip shape

Old Town plus one water day

Keep Friday on foot, reserve Saturday for the water, and leave Sunday flexible for beach, fort, gardens, or weather recovery.

Friday belongs to Old Town side streets, historic homes, the seaport, and a dinner reached on foot.

Saturday's clearest island memory often comes from a sail, snorkel trip, kayak outing, or fishing charter.
Painterly tropical shoreline at Fort Zachary Taylor in Key West
Sunday leaves room for the fort, beach, and a final Old Town meal before departure.

Friday

Check in, walk Old Town, and reach the harbor before sunset.

Start with Whitehead Street or the Historic Seaport, cross the quieter side streets rather than only Duval, and choose a sunset viewpoint before dinner.

Saturday

Give the best weather window to the water.

Use the morning for snorkeling, sailing, paddling, fishing, or a Dry Tortugas departure. Return for shade, a swim, and a reserved dinner rather than stacking another long excursion.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Return to shade and a slower afternoon.

Use the pool, a shaded Old Town street, or a museum after the boat rather than forcing another exposed activity into peak heat.

Sunday

Visit the fort and beach, then eat before the drive or flight.

Fort Zachary Taylor combines Civil War history, shade, and a rocky beach. If the weather changed Saturday, Sunday can absorb the missed water outing instead.
